I know that self propelled ride on mowers are used for more than just mowing the lawns on a Sunday afternoon, but I didn’t really know how much people got into it and that in a lot of places it is a seriously competitive sport. This short article opened my eyes about self propelled ride on mower racing and has even got me thinking if I should see if there are any local races about. Apparently there is a town in Indiana that has held an annual lawnmower race since 1963 and the race goes on for Twelve miles and draws spectators from all over the world each year just to come and watch these machines race.
The ride on mowers have all had their blades removed for safety reasons of course so if the correct gear is worn then serious accidents happen less frequently, but that doesn’t mean that a few minor ones are still likely to occur because the people who race in the Twelve Mile 500 take it seriously and are out to win in a good spirited kind of way.
There are so many models of self propelled ride on mowers that the people who enter these races really research hard about which mowers could give them the edge in the race.
So if you ever see someone in the mower section with racing gear on, they might just be getting ready for the next competition and trying to make an up-grade on their old machines.
